When you became a licensed aesthetician and then a certified lash artist, you most likely felt a huge sense of pride thanks to all your hard work and newfound skills. After doing lashes for a while, you may find yourself in a bit of a rut where you’re no longer challenging yourself or sharpening your skills. The solution to this is to continue your education throughout your career!
Even if your state doesn’t technically require continuing education to keep your license, doing so voluntarily has many benefits for you and your clients:
Continuing education is a great way to keep up-to-date on beauty trends as well as industry best practices. If you received your license years ago and haven’t kept up with current lash trends, for example, you may be using heavier lashes than necessary or not isolating them properly. As lash extensions become more widespread, they continue to improve, becoming lighter and more comfortable. Your technique needs to be able to keep up! Another example is the trend toward fuller, more dramatic brows. In order to help your clients achieve today’s looks, you need to make an effort to continue learning and growing as an artist.
The more continuing education you have, the more in-demand you are as a lash artist. If you go above and beyond by sharpening your skillset with continuing education classes, you will have access to better-paying opportunities at respected spas and lash studios.
It’s never too late to expand your skillset. Is there a beauty service you’d love to add to your repertoire? Why not take additional classes to learn eyebrow threading, waxing, facial massage, or different types of lash extensions (like volume lashes if you’ve only worked with classic lashes)? Doing so means you can offer the services your clients really want and diversify your business so you never get bored.
Don’t overlook the importance of soft skills. Continuing education doesn’t need to be solely focused on your technical and artistic skills. Attending educational seminars or taking classes focused on marketing, selling techniques, and communication will make you even more hireable if you are looking for a better job. These skills will also help you serve your clients better and do a more effective job of upselling them when appropriate, which can seriously boost your income. If you are interested in branching out on your own to start your own lash business, small business, accounting, and marketing classes are always a good idea.
Continuing your education on a regular basis is a great way to keep your skills fresh and feel empowered and inspired throughout your career.
